Reply to RaphaelM above: I don't pretend to be an expert, but i've got a very similar system to yours (P5B, Core 2 Duo, SATA HDD, and DVD player in the IDE) and i also had the installation stop on the "Uncompressing Linux...OK Booting the Kernel" screen. I did find some interesting things while i was first booting up my system...
first off, it's probably freezing there because you're not using the 64-bit version of the install CD. I completely spaced on the fact that the C2D is 64-bit, so using a 32-bit OS on the CD was making things weird. Seccondly, the mobo itself doesn't like extra USB connections. I tried hooking up my case and the damn thing wouldn't start unless i unplugged those usb ports. It's possible that if you are using an extended port that it doesn't want to recognize it.
