Hello, I have the same problem with ASUS P5B and CoreDuo, the hard-drive being connected to ICH8 SATA1 port, the DVD drive being connected to P5B PRI_IDE Connector.
I also tried to boot from another external DVD drive connected to USB ports, it also hangs after "Uncompressing Linux ... Ok, booting the kernel", but with error messages like: "usb 7-5: device not accepting address 4, error -110". I don't know if this is related, but maybe it can help. Let me know if I can provide more information.
