I successfully installed both Mainline kernels, linux-3.3.7-030307 -generic-pae and linux-3.9.0-030900rc3-generic-pae.
Both originally would not install because of a conflicting package, alsa-hda-dkms (the error was analogous to the example error with virtualbox under "Errors" in the Installing Mainline Kernel section of the Kernel/Mainline Builds Ubuntu Wiki page). I uninstalled alsa-dha- dkms and the kernels then successfully installed. I was able boot to either kernel, and while it is difficult to tell immediately whether or not the problem is/will be completely non-existent, since it is intermittent by nature, I have not yet had the trackpad detected as PS/2 Generic Mouse (and therefore totally useless); it's functionality seems restored. I'll continue to run both kernels over the next few days to see what happens. For what it's worth, a problem I've had with my microphone recording only a single stereo track disappeared. This was probably related to alsa-hda-dkms If the answer lies in an upstream kernel, what do I do next, since I am advised to not use Mainline kernels indefinitely?
