Just thought I'd follow up and confirm that everything has been working since I added the gnome3-team/gnome 3 ppa and upgraded. At the very least it has improved markedly since it would previously occur every few minutes. As I've said, I have this problem on all of my machines so the ultimate test will be to follow the same procedure on all of them. That however, is an experiment for this weekend (maybe tomorrow if I'm feeling motivated).
