@estimablesir (comment #187), I should have been clearer. After a fresh install of Ubuntu I had added the Gnome 3 Team PPA [ppa:gnome3-team/gnome3] to get updates for various Gnome packages that were not ready for the 11.10 feature freeze. Gnome-Shell updates are included in this PPA too, and while everything was stable for a time the Gnome-Shell started to freeze on me as described in this bug. After trying various solutions I purged the ppa:gnome3-team/gnome3 from my system, which meant rolling back all the updated Gnome packages to the Ubuntu 11.10 defaults as in the repos. Since doing that Gnome-Shell has been stable and I have not suffered a single freeze.
