@Keith Thanks for clarifying. Before you followed up with your comment, I double checked and realized I actually have the default gnome shell installed from the ubuntu repositories already. I then added the one you just purged and removed, then upgraded. The weird part is that since I did that, everything has been working. I think I have to use the system for longer to confirm, however.
