Keith, I'm glad to see you got everything working. Do you mean you uninstalled the gnome3 package? If so, how did you get the gnome-shell working correctly? Just removing the ppa wouldn't have had an impact on your current situation, it would merely prevent future updates from being retrieved and installed from the ppa.
