Rebooting doesn't make any difference in my case. The problem is permanent. The only workarounds that have any effect are those offered by Kenneth and Rhubarb: using Nouveau instead of the nVidia driver, using a .gtkrc or killing and restarting gnome-settings-daemon. But the problem remains.
