Rhubarb: X58 here, too.

Here's one more hint that could help a more knowledgeable
troubleshooter.

The login screen does seem to apply a theme, possibly Ambiance.
Assuming that the same piece of software applies the theme to the
login screen as well as the user's desktop, then the problem likely
occurs as the user's session is started.

Attached is my .xsession-errors file as it looks after login. There
are messages in there from gnome-settings-daemon. This seems
consistent with Rhubarb's discovery about gnome-settings-daemon.

Shouldn't we report this to Gnome?
