Same here the problem is persistent and does not occur once in a while. I haven't noticed it before in any previous Ubuntu release. So it really does start to look like a Core i7 problem. The driver itself doesn't seem to be the problem. I've used the 256.xx with 10.04 and the theme was working perfectly fine. The beta of 10.10 also used this driver and the theme problem occurred there as well. So it has to be a gnome package which fails with the nVidia driver in some how.
