Sorry to butt in. I have just had a very short power cut (less than a
second) and my UPS decided not to catch the glitch.

Anyway, the machine shut down and I have ended up with the same problem
as above.

When I start up Ubuntu it goes through a seemingly never ending file
check and then stops at the maintenance shell with the root prompt.

I have tried the suggestions in this thread but to no avail. I have been
running 9.10 for the last week with almost no problems. I am no linux
expert and really have no idea what commands I should try to recover my
setup.

Any ideas?
