Some more info: "kernel 2.6.31-14-generic" and "kernel 2.6.31-14-generic (recovery mode)" both result in the "Mount of root filesystem failed" error.
"kernel 2.6.28-16-generic" boot fine, well sort-of, it waited some time for the swap drive to mount and at some time an application error occurred, think it was Landscape-info.
