I haven't used windows maximised since I've been using more than 800x600

mainstream are centered around the usecase of a maximised window on a
high resolution screen. Therefore the tendency seems to be to make
things bigger such the the apps actually require more screen estate.

I don't think that's the case with Trojita. The patches under review actually *remove* widgets which -- in our default state -- are always shown, yet don't display anything useful most of the time.

I think that the screenshot you sent is a reasonable size for the app to
be in a non-maximised scenario and therefore it should be designed to
show the information well at that size.

I agree that Trojita should work fine on small screens, and using small window sizes -- if someone wants to look at, say, six small windows on his 27" screen, well, more power to them; it's just that maybe the wide, three-column layout might not be best for them. I also think that it should be able to make use of the extra space when a user wants to have a bigger window -- by showing more information.

I look to Trojita for a really minimalist and elegant experience and
it'd be good if future UI developments would focus on getting the most
out of the space it uses rather than just being like all the other clients.

Patches are welcome, and I'm serious about this one. It's obvious that your usage patterns are different than mine. I'll be happy to learn from how you use Trojita, and to help make it better fit your use case, too. Specific suggestions and patches are important in helping us get there.

Cheers,
Jan
