Have you checked out the Laptop HOWTO? If not, wander over
to (ummmmmmm ... memory-check) linuxdoc.org I think, and search
for it. Or look in /usr/doc/HOWTO for something like
Laptop-HOWTO.gz if you already have a Linux install.
