Hey all:

Short version of the question: what format do you generally prefer for your
external USB hard drives used with Macs -- case-sensitive or not?

Longer version of the question:
Recently, my Time Machine backups started failing. The error said that a
file could not be copied, and that I should try again, or try repairing the
drive with disk utility.

I tried disk utility, and it said there was nothing wrong with the drive.
The drive appears to be working in every other way, but Time Machine is
failing. This is apparently a common problem with no current solution.

Since my Time Machine drive (a Transcend StoreJet 1TB) was over 90% full
anyway, I decided it was time to buy a new 2TB drive.

First, I tried copying over the backupdb to the new drive, and then running
a backup, but I had the same error, so clearly something is corrupt in the
database. I decided to start fresh, and I can backup to a fresh drive no
problem.

However, I'm curious about whether the general consensus is to use
case-sensitivity or not. I don't have to, because my Mac root drive is not
case-sensitive. You can backup a non-case-sensitive drive to a
case-sensitive drive, but not vice-versa.

My old drive is case-sensitive, so that's what I set the new drive to, but
I wonder if maybe it's more prone to problems?

Thoughts?

Thanks,
-Adam
