Regardless of the exact definition, it's clearly going to get less attention in about 3 months.
fwiw, I had to buy a new PC for my mother in-law to replace her XP machine which was many years old. I'm not a Windows guy, so I mostly wanted to get her something that wouldn't be too new and confusing. I was going to go with 7, but it was hard to find new machines still coming with it, and I saw the upcoming end of support dates and figured why get something they're not going to want to deal with for much longer. So we went with 8. Seems to work OK, but things like the tile screen is confusing and annoying.
