Why are you upgrading to an OS that's already pretty close to end-of-support?
If you're doing a clean OS install, might as well go right to Windows 8.1.
Anecdotally, you'll even get better performance on lower-end hardware (like
your Atom with only 4GB of RAM).

Assuming you go with Windows 8, there are only two editions to choose from:
Windows 8 (with no fancy name, I'll call it "Basic") and Windows 8 Pro. There
technically are others, but you can't buy Enterprise or RT at retail so they
don't count.

The "Pro" name really is more like "Business." The main things it adds are the
ability to join a Windows domain, group policy support, and encrypted file
system support. Unless you need one of those, "Basic" will probably suit you
just fine, and will probably save you about forty dollars. The only home-ish
feature that requires Pro is Windows Media Center, but nobody uses that anyway.
For your home needs, you very likely don't need Pro. (And if you do need it,
you'll know that you need it.)

Assuming you don't need Microsoft support (you probably don't), look for the
OEM installer as opposed to the full-retail one; that will save a few more
dollars.

Short version: you probably want this:

Subject: [lopsa-tech] "Upgrading" to Windows 7

It's time for me to quit fighting and go ahead with an upgrade of my one
Windows system at home to Win7. I hate to spend the money, but it looks like
the way to go. So my questions are: What flavor of Win7 to buy and what do you
recommend for anti-virus?

The technical details are that it's a dual core Atom with 4GB RAM that I have a
spare 300GB drive to install on to.

It's not what I know that counts.
It's what I can remember in time to use.
