Matt, I have just done this to my Dell M6300 Workstation. I went with Windows 7 Professional 64 bit. I use Eset Nod32 for virus protection and malware/email protector. The first thing I would do is max out the memory. 4GB is okay but if you can go higher do so. My current $WORK machine is a Dell Precision M6600 with 8GB of RAM running Win 7 64 Bit and it works okay but gets a bit sluggish if I fire up VirtualBox to do some work on a few Test VMs.
I have used sSet Nod 32 for a few years and it has done me well.
