Believe it or not, this really is a technical question that is sysadmin
related.

I've just started a new job where I am spending lots of time in a very
noisy datacenter. Currently I wear earplugs and/or earmuffs. I have tried
using my iPhone earbuds under the earmuffs and too much noise gets past for
them to be very useful. So, I am looking for recommendations for noise
isolating earbud (with microphone) that I can use under the ugly earmuffs.
Besides listening to music while doing inventory, I need to be able to make
calls from the somewhat noisy meeting room inside the data center.

I like the Bose qc15. It has a iphone-compatible mic:

they're active noise-cancling headphones and they really cut out the
datacenter noise.

I tried a set of Bose in the store last weekend, and I admit they were pretty good. If you're looking for in-ear phones, look at Shure or Entymonic; I'm on my second set of Shure's, and I'm not sure I like the new design, but they do a damn good job of noise cancelling.
