In the 2nd edition this is chapter 6, Data Centers. (By the way... 2nd edition is available on www.safaribooksonline.com even though it is not an O'Reilly book). There is a typo in the first printing and I'm not sure if the correction has made it into production. "Five tons of cooling for every 1,000 square feet" is the rule of thumb from 2001 (the text says per 5,000 sq ft). That is a 2001 number... machine density has gotten a lot better since then. (Updates anyone?) A good rack salesperson will help you work out the A/C, cabling and other issues. I found this because no matter what goes wrong people blame the racks, so the rack salespeople try to get everything set up right to reduce the blame. Also remember that in general the amount of power you use for cooling will equal the amount of power you use for your computers and other equipment. Often the cooling will require more power than the equipment due to loss.
