I dunno, the project I'm working has no tables and all layout is done using CSS. They key was to have a an HTML/CSS guru design the templates from the beginning. No Java developer EVER modifies the css and rarely needs to modify the html beyond the usual (jwcid).
It's been a joy to work this way.
