That depends on your phone. For example, if you had an unbranded E71
then your cell phone provider wouldn't have anything to do with the
firmware you're running on that phone. On the other hand, if you had an
AT&T branded E71X, you could only get firmware updates from AT&T.
Another example would be the N75. If you had gotten an unbranded Nokia
N75 then your cell phone carrier wouldn't be in the loop when it came to
your phone's firmware. An AT&T branded N75, however, would be stuck with
AT&T's firmware. At one point, you could unbrand the N75 and put Nokia's
stock firmware on it, but AT&T released a level of firmware for the
phone that prevented you from doing that, so once you'd updated to that
level of firmware then you were stuck with AT&T's updates after that.
Therefore, like I said, it depends on your phone and whether it's
branded or not.

Is it true that firmware is dictated by your phone operator? I've

certain providers only allow certain firmware on their devices.

Yes on your E71 you are OK with upgrading it as far as the firmware. You are
correct that you will need to install Talks and the like again. So being you
now have your Talks code! You can just type it in when you are done
installing Talks.

Thanks Brad. I've obtained my license number and am back up and running.
Thanks, Stephen, for recommending Talknav.
One further question afterall: upon checking my E71 firmware, I was a bit
surprised to realize how out of step I am. I'm on version 100-something,
and
I see that 500 Is available. I seem to recall, however, that there were
some
cautions about the accessibility of certain firmware upgrades. Am I better
off leaving well enough alone, or am I safe to upgrade my phone at once? I
realize that I';l have to go through this whole reinstall process again,
but
at least I now know what to do.
Many thanks,
Michelle

No there is not. If yo u haven't had a 30 day demo on that phone then you
can do that but if you have already had a 30 day trial then you can not
put
another one on it.

Makes sense. Thanks again, Stephen. One more quick query before I leave
you
alone -- is there a way to upgrade my demo to the 10-day version while I
wait to have my original license restored?
Thanks,
Michelle

This is a dealers address I gave you and you are dealing with a dealer of
Talks and not Nuance directly.
Like anything! time of day and the like will depend on how fast they
respond
to you.

Many thanks for this, Stephen. This method makes sense, as there was
no phone transfer involved. What's your experience with Nuance's
response time for such requests?

You can send a email to serv...@talknav.com with your phones IMEI
number and they can look up your existing license number for Talks.
To have any chance of your text message function working to restore a
Talks license code! You need international text messaging on your
calling plan.
You do not need to buy any license as another user stated beings you
just formatted your phone.

Subject: [Talks] Revised inquiry: restoring Talks license?
Hello all,
I decided to be a bit more enterprising and succeeded in getting the
10-minute demo of Talks installed on my now fully functional phone.
I'm now encountering problems trying to restore my license, or even
using the 10-day demo. The requisite SMS message is sent out no
problem, but then I receive
a
prompt to wait with a caution that it could take a few minutes. At
this point the phone simply sits there for considerably longer than a
few minutes (it was north of half an hour at one point). I'm not sure
where to retrieve my old license number so I can register it
manually. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Many thanks,
Michelle

Subject: Restoring Talks to freshly formated E71 phone?
Hello all,
Hope everyone's been well during my long hiatus from the list.
I've got a bit of a situation here, and I'm hoping you knowledgeable
people can help me out in some way. My Nokia E71 was recently
behaving strangely after more than two years of flawless performance.
I encountered the "memory full" issue that's plagued some people in
the past, despite the fact that more than half the phone's memory was
available. To make a long story short, I backed up my information,
performed a hard reset and restored the backup.
All went swimmingly except for one key detail -- the Talks program
got lost in the shuffle! I obtained this phone through Rogers
Wireless in Canada with the Talks software pre-installed, so now I'm
at something of a loss. Is it buried somewhere unusual in the system?
Do I reinstall from scratch? If so, I'd be very grateful for some
guidance on how to do this, as I haven't done so before.
Thanks so much for your help -- I'm really hoping to have a
functional phone again soon!
All the best,
Michelle
