Thanks, Christopher. Since I obtained my phone directly from my wireless
provider (Rogers Wireless), I'll assume I'm confined to their updates. I'll
sort it out with them. Thanks for this clarification and all the other
answers list members have given me today.

Best,
Michelle

That depends on your phone. For example, if you had an unbranded E71 then
your cell phone provider wouldn't have anything to do with the firmware
you're running on that phone. On the other hand, if you had an AT&T branded
E71X, you could only get firmware updates from AT&T.

Another example would be the N75. If you had gotten an unbranded Nokia
N75 then your cell phone carrier wouldn't be in the loop when it came to
your phone's firmware. An AT&T branded N75, however, would be stuck with
AT&T's firmware. At one point, you could unbrand the N75 and put Nokia's
stock firmware on it, but AT&T released a level of firmware for the phone
that prevented you from doing that, so once you'd updated to that level of
firmware then you were stuck with AT&T's updates after that.

Therefore, like I said, it depends on your phone and whether it's branded or
not.
