How many firmware updates have really made "a very big difference to battery life gps reception." I'm not saying it can't happen, but I doubt every firmware update results in a big difference in battery life. I'm sure though that some firmware updates have resulted in some minor increases in battery life. It comes down to the problems you're having with your phone. If your GPS reception is awful, you don't get good battery life and you're calling Nokia or your carrier for support then by all means backup your data and do whatever you can to get your phone back to the state it's in (Just in case the cure is worse than the disease.) and update your phone. I'd also suggest only updating your phone if you know what's supposed to be fixed in the firmware update your applying. Typically the phone manufacturers are pretty quiet as to what is actually being fixed in each firmware update. I'd also press the support team to find out why they think a firmware update is going to fix the particular problem you're seeing.
