Bernard, how many problems do you have with your phone that require that type of call? you can always ask on list if you can update, if you cannot, then you can tell whoever you are talking to that updating is not an option and why, then find out what they say.
older FW is often blamed you are right, but you can always ask the list, usually someone will know if they are talking rubbish or not.
