Ticket pricing shouldn't have anything to do with it. Here in Belgium, you buy a ticket valid for a specific duration. As long as it didn't expire, you can still board the vehicle.
OK, I'm not sure what would happen if you got onto a 'roundtrip' bus with a ticket valid for 1 hour and you are still on it 3 hours later... Oh those corner cases!
