one reason to keep the abandoned railways in place is that in fact
they are still frequently meaningful landmarks.

another is that while many aren't cycleways yet, from time to time they
do get converted; Albany County (NY) just purchased an old D&H
line with the intent to convert it into a new bike/hike trail. since the
old line is still in OSM, it will be easy to flip the switch when the
county is done with the work.
