I also have not seen runways tagged as nodes, but I have seen many, many nodes tagged as aeroway=aerodrome. You're right, probably many of these could have their runways traced from aerial imagery, but I've also seen quite a few where I could not make out a runway. Now this is either because the airport no longer exists or because it's a grass runway that I cannot distinguish from a field.
