And preferably, renderers should use primarily the importance tag, rather than the other information, when deciding whether or not to render something. Although there are other uses of map data, the primary use is for renderers. We don't abuse our own tagging systems to suit a specific version of a specific renderer, but we certainly "tag for renderers"... Going out of our way to avoid using something like an importance tag in order to avoid "tagging for a renderer" is a perfect example of cutting off our nose to spite our face. Good rendering requires good hints from the cartographer - us.
