By mixed-order, are you suggesting first order for lows, second order
for mids, and third order for highs? That would require so many
channels...
I was posting before seeing this.
Indeed, I have argued that Jörn (currently) seems to use a 1st order
decoder for subs and a TOA decoder for the "non-full range" PA system.
The "three-way system", why would you really need this?!
That was my idea when I decided to use small 5.1 sets. But I prefered
concentric/coaxial/fullrange loudspeakers, rather than two-ways,
because I think they are more adequate in a small room. They can be
cheaper too.

Exactly. Because we seem to be able to hear some LF directivity
(otherwise one sub would be enough), you probably will need some
fullrange speakers for a good home Ambisonics setup. Or would it be
preferable and/or cheaper to use two subs, one in front and one in the
back? Could work, but won't be supported by any Ambisonics decoder/sound
processor...
Feedback welcome...
