Hi Stefan.

I use an equilateral triangle of subs for a few reasons:
- I use small satellite speakers with a 125Hz cut-off frequency,
  so I can hear some directional cues from the subs, around 125Hz;
  the subs are on a small circle (radius=1.2m), which helps.
- The left and right subs are also for listening to plain stereo.
- Two or more subs can better distribute lower frequencies in a room.
- I have 3 small subs because I bought three small 5.1 speakers sets...

Of course, I don't need to crank up the volume with three subs;
they provide just enough bass, and a better envelopment.
