In that case, we'll need a clear definition of the difference
between "new" and "unread" as he understands it.

I do sometimes toggle a message back to "unread" after I've read
it because I want to go back and read it again later. But as a
general rule, new messages are unread and unread messages are new
in my world.

I will be quite happy using the same criteria that is used to
control the folder pane icons on each group.

I will say that the group icons do not always work as might be
desired. I get most of my newsgroups from eternal-september and those
icons seem to work pretty well. I get this group from
news.mozilla.org. Often when this group has new messages the icon
does not change, most of the time in fact. I have not been able to
figure out what determines when it will work correctly and when it
won't.

One other small glitch is that the status of the "new message"
indication does not survive restarting the program. There are times
when I need to kill SeaMonkey and restart it when there are "new"
messages indicated. When restarted none of the groups will indicate
there are new messages until further new messages come in.

I'm not asking that either of these two issues in the operation of
the new message icon be fixed, I just wanted to mention them in case
they would be encountered by someone else.

My experience overlaps with yours somewhat.

Let me begin by saying that I have SM set to automatically check all mail
and newsgroup accounts for new messages every 10 minutes and download any it
finds.

For mail accounts, if the account is collapsed (no folders showing), I get
the green down arrow when a new message comes in. However, after some time
(I haven't really investigated how long or under what conditions), the arrow
disappears even though I haven't expanded the account to read new messages.
When I do get around to expanding it, folders with unread messages are
bolded as expected, with an accurate count to the right of the folder name.

For newsgroup accounts such as this one, I never see the green arrow when
the account is collapsed. When I expand it to show the specific groups under
it, the group names are bolded if they contain new messages, with the count
to the right just as for mail folders. However, when I select the group
name, SM double-checks its work and updates the count, so the count that I
saw when I arrived is usually off by a bit. I suppose this is because new
messages have been posted since SM last checked six, eight, 10 minutes ago.

Messages themselves are bolded in both cases in the message listing, but
their icons do not vary according to read/unread status.

I haven't noticed any changes in read/unread status due to a program or
system restart.

Just to be clear, when I talk about "new" messages, that is not the same a "unread" messages. If I open a group there can be unread messages from previous times when I opened the group. Often there are entire threads in any given group that are unread. "New" messages are ones that have arrived since the last time I have closed a group. They will be unread, but they may not be the only unread messages.

In general, when I see group names in the folder pane or messages in the message pane in bold, that means there are "unread" messages regardless of whether they are "new" or not.
