On my system, folder names with unread messages are bolded, and

Of course, expanded threads with unread messages show the
individual messages as roman (read) or bold (unread).

If I understand correctly, he wants to distinguish between existing
unread messages and new unread messages, in the folder pane and the
thread pane.

In that case, we'll need a clear definition of the difference between "new"
and "unread" as he understands it.

I do sometimes toggle a message back to "unread" after I've read it because
I want to go back and read it again later. But as a general rule, new
messages are unread and unread messages are new in my world.

I will be quite happy using the same criteria that is used to control the folder pane icons on each group.

I will say that the group icons do not always work as might be desired. I get most of my newsgroups from eternal-september and those icons seem to work pretty well. I get this group from news.mozilla.org. Often when this group has new messages the icon does not change, most of the time in fact. I have not been able to figure out what determines when it will work correctly and when it won't.

One other small glitch is that the status of the "new message" indication does not survive restarting the program. There are times when I need to kill SeaMonkey and restart it when there are "new" messages indicated. When restarted none of the groups will indicate there are new messages until further new messages come in.

I'm not asking that either of these two issues in the operation of the new message icon be fixed, I just wanted to mention them in case they would be encountered by someone else.
