Winamp and RealPlayer do indeed work with a number of the streams I
like, mostly classical music. Although Winamp does not appear in the
list of plugins with either [Help > About Plugins] or [Tools > Add-ons
Manager > Plugins], I can select a link to a stream and receive the
broadcast.

However, I am having trouble with some live streaming broadcasts. The
affected (and afflicted) links end with the extension .pls (e.g.,
listen.pls, mp3.pls). When I select a .pls link, I get an error popup
that says:
C:\Users\David\AppData\Local\Temp\listen-7.pls could not be opened,
because the associated helper application does not exist. Change the
association in your preferences.
The "listen-7.pls" might instead be "mp3-5.pls" for a mp3.pls link.

When I go to [Edit > Preferences > Browser > Helper Applications], I
cannot find an entry for .pls. I do find an entry for MIME type
audio/x-scpls but not audio/pls, neither of which are registered with
the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (IANA).

How do I create a new Helper Application entry for .pls files?

David, have you specified in Winamp that it should handle .pls files?

In Winamp:

Options - Preferences - File Types - make sure PLS is highlighted.

When I clicked the links you supplied in another post Winamp started and the item appears in its Playlist. If you want the stream to automatically play then UNcheck "Enqueue files on double click" option.
