There are three projects that would benefit from someone who knows
OpenGL - "Realistic comet rendering", "Satellite and ring shadows on
parent planets" (inc. eclipses) and "Irregular Solar System bodies".

You can also have a look at the bug/wishlist tracker at Launchpad:

Getting Stellarium's code and looking around it is also a good idea.
