The interstitial space has to be physically separated from the clean room below
so that no air flow migrates into the clean room space. So very, very little
chance of heat or smoke from the clean room migrating into the interstitial
space.

The catwalk is above 2-feet above the clean room ceiling and the building roof
is about 15 ft overhead.

The interstitial space covers the same area as the 700,000 sq. ft. clean room.

4.5.2.2 and 4.5.2.3 don’t match the conditions.

Cliff, these microelectronic Fabrication facilities can and often exceed a
million sq. ft. of open area and can be multiple stories high.

I’m going to declare it the same as two individual stories serving 52K SF above
and 52K SF below from one system and run with it.

Craig,

I agree with Todd. Even if you considered the space as ‘another floor’, you
can sprinkler up to 52,000 sf per floor and you can do a “2-story” bldg. with
only one control assembly.

BTW – 700,000 sf is a nice sized clean room 😊

What size are the equipment platforms? You might also need to look at 4.5.2.2
and 4.5.2.3.

I need a sanity check.

I have a micro-electronics clean room area. H-5 occupancy. The interstitial
space above is above 15 ft high and has catwalks which are above the cleanroom
ceiling. Architects have deemed the interstitial space as “Equipment
Platforms”, unoccupied space.

Referencing IBC/IFC 2021, NFPA 13, 2019

Both the clean room and the interstitial space require full sprinkler
protection per the building code, typically OH-2.

Based on NFPA 13, the maximum area for the OH system is 52,000 sq. ft.

Per 2019 NFPA 13, 4.5.2 if the area is considered a mezzanine there is no
requirement to include the sq. footage of the interstitial space as part of the
system area. However, the interstitial space has a substantial ceiling
assembly between it and the occupied clean room below so it’s closer in
definition to an attic space or non-combustible concealed space with no
provision for storage. Access is restricted and limited.

Overall the clean room is around 700,000 sq. ft. total so I’ve got a LOT of
systems and am trying to determine size and quantity of riser rooms.

So, does it make sense to not include the area of the interstitial space in
determining the number of risers. Basically one OH system can cover 52,000 sf
of clean room and 52,000 sq. ft. of interstitial space?
