I need a sanity check. I have a micro-electronics clean room area. H-5 occupancy. The interstitial space above is above 15 ft high and has catwalks which are above the cleanroom ceiling. Architects have deemed the interstitial space as “Equipment Platforms”, unoccupied space.
Referencing IBC/IFC 2021, NFPA 13, 2019 Both the clean room and the interstitial space require full sprinkler protection per the building code, typically OH-2. Based on NFPA 13, the maximum area for the OH system is 52,000 sq. ft. Per 2019 NFPA 13, 4.5.2 if the area is considered a mezzanine there is no requirement to include the sq. footage of the interstitial space as part of the system area. However, the interstitial space has a substantial ceiling assembly between it and the occupied clean room below so it’s closer in definition to an attic space or non-combustible concealed space with no provision for storage. Access is restricted and limited. Overall the clean room is around 700,000 sq. ft. total so I’ve got a LOT of systems and am trying to determine size and quantity of riser rooms. So, does it make sense to not include the area of the interstitial space in determining the number of risers. Basically one OH system can cover 52,000 sf of clean room and 52,000 sq. ft. of interstitial space?
