IDP broadband providers that give their customers direct access to port 25 on remote systems by default. Spam from AOL dropped to almost nothing once they did that.
Oh, one other thing - when did they do that? Just today, my relays have rejected about 9000 messages total from various (Hex_IP_address).ipt.aol.com. Looks to me like port 25 is open to AOL clients, and they are having a party.
AOL is the only ISP whose clients I block from direct access to my mail servers. AOL users are supposed to have crippled internet, accessed only through the AOL client, which does not include a SMTP relay engine. Everybody else must pass the SA gauntlet, whether they are on dialup, DSL, or using their ISP mail server.
