I now see that I was not specific enough about what I have been doing.
Let me explain in more detail:

I had installed the version 2.60-cvs version of SpamAssassin several
months ago (AFAIK this was some kind of developement version and not
a final release version...).
All the problems I described happened with this version (including
my current problem).
I personally haven't done any configuration changes to the SpamAssassin
installation which would explain this phenomenon. Unless the administration
here has done something to the system-wide perl installation (which I
doubt because SpamAssassin uses a fixed path to the perl installation
directory which has a version number in it, and I doubt that anyone
would go change that; a new version of perl would go to a differently
named directory), I don't know why this phenomenon is happening.

I installed today the 2.60 version of SpamAssassin (that is, several
days after my current problem showed up) to see if it could help the
problem, but it didn't seem to change anything: spamassassin's and
sa-learn's behaviour is identical to earlier (ie to version 2.60-cvs).
I assumed that because of this it didn't matter which version I was
using currently.
It *could* perhaps be that there was a bug in 2.60-cvs and now the
databases are broken?

Running perl -e "use DB_File" doesn't give any error message,
which means that at least some DB_File version is installed in
this system. However, I don't know how to get more info about it.

% spamassassin --version
SpamAssassin version 2.60

Before using the version 2.60-cvs I used the 2.5* version, and that
file is probably a remnant of that,

Since I can't make system-wide installations in this system, if SA
needs some newer version of DB_File, how do I make a local installation?

                                                        - Warp
