Hold it a sec, not all rpms contain the source, in fact unless things have changed I thought that most contained precompiled binaries, and that was the problem with them.
Correct. Source RPMS (.src.rpm) have the source; otherwise (unless it's a perl package or something interpreted/bytecoded/etc) it's a precompiled binary -> compiled for the lowest common denominator (usually i386) and not very optimized, at least in my experience.

eg. webserver, contains many parts, core of which is apache, mysql, php. I want each of these componants installed as independantly as possible, so that in the event of upgrading one (or a componant of one) it has minimum impact on the other.
My biggest gripe as well. My 2nd biggest is dependencies - often you can't uninstall something you don't want without uninstalling something you *do* want, unless you --nodeps, which can break a lot of other stuff, anyway... <sigh>
