No, this is a GDBM issue. There's a bug already open for it, and we're discussing what to do about it. Basically GDBM is stupid and doesn't allow control chars in the token keys. Which kind of sucks. ;)
What would be the downside of just encoding any non-printable character? Like URL-encoding, or backslash-escaping.
