Well you are right about the open proxy issue - when I first
started seeing these I ran rbl checks and almost every one
came from a listed open proxy. What ticked me off was that
I was seeing a lot of bounces from AOL, so basically AOL
could protect their users simply by using a couple of RBL
lists to stop email from open proxies. If the major ISPs
simply incorporate open relay/open proxy blocks, then a big
part of the spam issue would go away.

As to proving where it comes from, I'm just not sure it's
worth the effort on an individual basis -- a lot of time &
expense involved.  That's another thing the big ISP's could
do - instead of being lax towards spam, they could use their
resources to go after the worst offenders.
