I ran up against this issue myself, when I finally bit the bullet and started using the SBL for MTA level blocking. I have not had a major problem, BUT it is important to know that the Spamhaus list does include some major commercial mass emailers who also run the sort of lists that some people want to get. So I would NOT recommend it for blocking (as opposed to tagging) in an environment serving outside users. (I'm using it in an inhouse environment) -- and you may have to monitor it to make sure it doesn't inadvertantly block some legit subscription lists. Case in point: I found it was blocking email from internetseer.com which offers a freebie site-pinging service, basically emailing subscribers when their web site goes down. Well, I understand that the company does send out UCE as well, but the fact is, I DID sign up and I do want at least some of their email. I simply whitelisted them & it solved my problem.... but obviously the problem could be repeated elsewhere. >> > In fact the SBL is the *only* one of the blocklists that I would trust for >> > MTA level blocking. Actually, I've found the most effective MTA level blocking has been open relay/open proxy blocklists. I've been using opm.blitzed.org and dsbl.org and am very happy with results. >> > Any open relay list is going to have collateral damage due to the simple >> > fact that not *all* messages sent through open relays are spam... ;-) Very true, but my rationale for blocking the open relays is that I think the people who have them ought to know about them and fix them. I don't use ordb.org because they go out and actively test for relays whether or not there has been a problem; the databases I listed above only add specified IP's when there has been a verified report of actual abuse. -Abigail ------------------------------------------------------- This SF.Net email is sponsored by: INetU Attention Web Developers & Consultants: Become An INetU Hosting Partner.
