The question wasn't meant to be troll-worthy.  At first glance, it
seemed a little strange to me that opt-in (ie. customers had signed up
for the service) would also be filtering it.

Rethinking here...

Couldn't they use an encryption scheme?  That is, they sign their
email with a string that has to (crypto-) match the IP of the system
that the email originates from?  SpamAssassin (and others) could check
this as a means of allowing the SPAM through.  The obvious advantage
is that this SPAM can now be traced if it is sent to the wrong
person.
