Does this surprise anyone? <no show of hands> I didn't think so.

| headers_check_syntax = true

I'm using exim 4 now, and I have
    deny !verify = header_syntax

in my DATA ACL.

| We were running it for a while since it blocked a reasonble amount of spam

It is a very cool feature. It's also cool to have an ACL that rejects
any message with 8bit data in the headers.

| 1. The Problem
|
| When Outlook is used to send email to a list of people the ihug.co.nz
| addresses will bounce with an error message similar to:
|
| 550 Syntax error in 'To' header: "@" or "." expected after "Undisclosed-Recipient":
|failing address is: <Undisclosed-Recipient:;>

Mmm hmm. I've seen a bunch of those in my rejectlog.

| 2. The Quick Solution

Don't use an outhouse? :-)

| When the list maintainer sends email to the list they should put a real email
| address (their own is best) in the "To: " field and *then* Bcc to the list.
| This will fix the error.

A band-aid can fix a broken bone too :-).

| 3. Why does this happen?

Some software vendor, not to mention any names
*cough*microsoft*cough*, doesn't like to play with the rest of the
world.

| The problem is caused by people who use Outlook

You got it.

| and Bcc an email to a list of people.

oh, that wasn't a complete sentence ;-).

| There is some reference to the problem at:

2000. That's old. Recently someone was trying to craft a rewrite
rule to fix it hoping to work around the bug.

This bug rather reminds me of the "begin" bug.

As you have no doubt discerned by now, I have no sympathy for
Microsoft LookOut and it's continuous and ever increasing cause of
breakage on the Internet. I don't think I've lost any valuable mail
due to that violation. The reject log shows who the message is from,
etc, and I run a small enough service to not worry about "customer"
complaints.

How do I hate Outlook ? Let me count the ways.

Fitting .sig (randomly choosen, really), I think, relating to the
lack of correction found in Outlook.
