We handle about 1/2 million incoming mail messages per week for local people.
Everybody is in by default. When SA (via spamc/spamd, local checks only, MySQL
preferences) was first brought up with all components on our mail machine, it damn
near brought things to a screeching halt. We moved spamd to two additional machines,
and with some crudish load balancing, we've now got it happily handling the mail
volume in a timely manner.

None of these machines are what you would call high powered:

   - mail server: 300 MHz, 1 CPU, 512MB
   - spamd server 1: 360 MHz, 1 CPU, 512MB
   - spamd server 2: 300 MHz, 2 CPU, 512MB

It's easier to fight for one's principles than to live up to them.
