I am a home user of opensuse, now 12.2, and I have run into difficulty
with installing softimage on the system (I have a dual boot pc with xp
pro).
I have asked around and looked around but only found hints and things
that I don't really get.

I think the generic way to do this would be,
X -configure
and it should give you a xorg configuration file right there.
xorg.conf.new
I think,
then you will want to run
X -config xorg.conf.new
and if it works, rename it
mv xorg.conf.new xorg.conf
and then put it in one of the following
