Herbert,
He straightened out the ~/Library/TeXShop/Engines issue. Now I'm waiting for
him to follow my suggestion and edit XeTeX.engine and XeLaTeX.engine so they
look like mine. I conjecture that the path at the top of his engines has
/usr/texbin but not /Library/TeX/texbin.

George White makes some very good points.
However, Christian Boitet's original message discussed TeXShop, and TeXShop
never consults the user's $PATH setting. It will be easier if Boitet gets
TeXShop working first, before dealing with the complexities
of shell startup scripts.

The error message you reported mentions /opt/local/bin, etc. MacTeX doesn't
install TeX Live in /opt. Thus you are running into trouble because your
system is looking for TeX in the wrong place.
However, it is entirely possible that MacTeX did the co

Everyone I know in TUG recommends installation of the full TeX Live,

trouble getting TUG to support BasicTeX on the Mac for this reason.
The “small” scheme is just BasicTeX, which I created. So this comes from

Folks,
To second Herb, Alan's test file typesets without error on
Mountain Lion with the release version of MacTeX-2012.
The second font isn't in Lion, but is in Mountain Lion.

I replied to Will Adam's comment as soon as I read it, apologizing to you.
Then I incorrectly the reply to Will rather than to the list.
I'm not going to reply to (or even read) mailing lists the rest of today.

information from personal contacts, convinces me that XeTeX is heavily
used by people with real work to be done.
