Hello !
I'm using VNC with some Pcs (servers, workstations in nt4 or 2000), without
any problem. I met with a memory problem on one pc. The OS is NT4 SP4
workstation. VNC server is running as service. Without using VNC, the amount
of memory used by the process "winvnc" is increasing with 3-4 K
Which version of VNC are you using ?
I know this isn't a solution, but can't you just kill the VNC service by the
task manager and then restart the service ?

we resolve anything. There is somewhere a memory leak caused by VNC or the

You must run "winvnc -install" on the remote machine to install the service
and then "net start" to start it. You will have to copy appropriate default
settings to the machine's registry first, though.

I use NT4SP6a on quite a few systems, including our backup server (running
Legato NetWorker). It works fine. I installed SP6a because of a vendor
recommendation, but I can't remember which one.
I believe that SP6 is bad news ...
Here is the configuration I used and it work just fine

There was some bad reports on SP6 when it first came out...
caused alot of blue screens...but the SP6a patch fixed
those problems. Have not heard of many problems since then.

Foolish question, I'm sure, and more political than technical, but how
exactly did your supervisors *intend* for you to do this administration?
It seems

I don't think that xhost is going to help. xhost affects authorization to
use an X display, but the error message does not indicate an authentication
error. It appears to indicate that Display :0 simply does not exist.

I am aware of the glaring fubars present in SP4, and that SP5 fixed at

Hi,
I've tested VNC for several days, and I really find it interesting for
screen capture encoding.
The question is: do you feel it is simple, with the source code, to create a
screen encoding application, without any consideration for the client-server
model?
I refine the problem:

Thanks for the reply.
I can connect using http://computer:5800 if the server is running VNC but
not if it is running Tridia, so it seems as if Tridia has indeed dropped
Java. Perhaps I need to return to the standard VNC!

Hi Nicolas,
did you test Snagit (www.snagit.com)?
It is little and simple shareware for screen captures and may help you.

They actually took httpd.c out of the source tree. But it is relatively
easy to add it and the hooks back in, and I've done that by comparing the
VNC sources to the Tridia sources. I could generate patch files for this if
anyone is interested.

I have VNC installed on a Windows NT server and installed as a service.
Every time I start the machine, it says the password for VNC is not set. I
have set it a number of times, but it doesn't seem to set it. Any ideas?

I have found that when VNC runs on a Windows NT system with two NICs, access
is available via both NICs. Indeed, I had to struggle to get the settings
right to prevent access via the external NIC (using the AuthHosts registry
key).
