I think the main differences from the /etc/init.d/vncserver script (I will call this the service script) and xinit are: you can specify users and ports through the service script (including password protection). This makes it more secure than xinit unless you limit the xinit to 1 user. Unfortuna

The answer is "it depends". You really need to test settings and see what works best in your situation. For example, over a modem link, "Tight" compression is much faster than "Hextile". But over Ethernet it's noticably slower -- the extra compression overhead causes more of a delay than just s
